Probably not……..The reason? Most wardrobes
are designed by “designers” from wardrobe or kitchen companies who’s objective
is to sell you their product.
These designers used to be more honestly
called salespeople. I know because I was one of them. If wardrobe companies
were truly offering personalized design you would see a broader range of
finishes and construction methods being employed.
If you hired an architect to design your home
would you be happy if it looked like every other one in his portfolio?
I’m disappointed by the fact that the
wardrobe industry on the whole “gets away” with this deception. Many wardrobes
look alright on paper but don’t work when installed due to poor design.
The
clients never even realise that it is the wardrobe that is failing and not
them. It is the wardrobe that is to blame for the mess and disorganization and
not them. It’s akin to the project home that looks brilliant on display-it
isn’t a home! Not until someone is living in it.
Same applies to wardrobes- shelves that won’t
stay tidy, the floor of the wardrobe is a mess and items are lost.
Unfortunately the wardrobe is not how it looked in the brochure or on the
drawing because a real person is using it. Most people think they have failed
and are embarrassed that they have spent money on new wardrobes that are still
messy.
Having designed many wardrobes and customized
pieces of furniture over the years, I know that the majority of clients don’t
really understand drawings and plans.
Visualizing is an ability that is beyond
many people. So they rely on the designer/salesperson to interpret what it is
that they need and deliver it. This is
where client falls into the hands of the salesperson and trusts the salesperson
will design something that will solve their needs.
At this point the salesperson molds what the company makes to fit what they believe the client will buy. I
know- I started out in this industry back in 1987 and was a top sales person.
I
was told “sell what you have in your bag”! and that was the company that was so
called leading the market in personal designs and we were instructed to make
the client fit the company.
That was when I decided to leave and actually be
more open to designing for clients who really want custom design and understand
the value of it.
Good design is a good investment- it means
getting your brief filled without the constraints of someone else’s
specification- that can actually result in spending less because true design is
open to all options.
